The bones in a foot are positioned in such a manner that a strong longitudinal arch exists on the inside of the foot with a perpendicular arch from the inside to the outside of the foot at the level of the cuneiform bones and the metatarsal bones in the middle of the foot. Muscles, ligaments and tendons serve to maintain these arches.
